Cyprus prayer times

Cyprus has a prayer timetable published for the northern part of the island and a scattered Muslim population in the south. This page explains which table the app serves and what it does and does not claim.

Matches the Diyanet timetable · 0-minute difference

Scope of this claim

Condition: the row is taken from the timetable Diyanet publishes for Cyprus, as its own label shows, and no personal minute adjustment is applied. Days the timetable does not cover are calculated and labelled as such; the sentence does not apply to them. No match is claimed with the separate timetable of the TRNC Presidency of Religious Affairs.

Calculation and source

Institution
Presidency of Religious Affairs of the TRNC
Method
Diyanet angles
Fajr 18° / Isha 17°. This is the Turkish convention, not the locally published Cyprus table.
Asr
The Hanafi shadow ratio of two is the default for Cyprus, following the practice of the Turkish Cypriot community; the standard shadow-one time can be selected in the app.
Precaution minutes
None. The app adds no precaution minutes of its own.
Time zone
Cyprus follows the European daylight saving schedule across the whole island. Between 2016 and 2017 the north briefly kept permanent summer time while the south changed the clocks, which put the two halves an hour apart in winter; that divergence ended and the island is back on one clock. Historical timetables from those two winters should not be compared directly with today’s.
Hijri calendar and crescent
Ramadan and the two Eids in the north follow the calculated Turkish calendar, so dates are known well in advance. Muslim communities in the south, largely made up of residents from other countries, generally follow their own community’s announcement.

Presidency of Religious Affairs of the TRNC

Cyprus prayer times

One island, one listing, two administrations

Cyprus is the only entry in this directory where the published settlement list crosses a line of political control. The Turkish Presidency of Religious Affairs prints times for places in the north — Lefkoşa, Gazimağusa, Girne, Güzelyurt, İskele, Lefke and Dipkarpaz — and also for Larnaka, Lemesos, Baf and Pile in the south and the buffer area. The app follows that listing and names it on every row. Meanwhile the Presidency of Religious Affairs of the TRNC publishes its own timetable for the north, which the app does not use. Where the two differ, a mosque board in the north follows the TRNC table; any 0-minute statement on these pages refers only to the Diyanet listing the rows are taken from.

Why the afternoon prayer is the Hanafi one

Cyprus is the smallest country in this directory where the default afternoon prayer is the Hanafi time at a shadow ratio of two. The reason is community practice: Turkish Cypriot mosques follow the Turkish convention, and the timetables printed in the north use the same column as those printed in Türkiye. At Cyprus’s latitude, around 35 degrees north, the gap between the two afternoon definitions is smaller than in northern Europe — roughly forty minutes at midsummer rather than an hour or more — but it is still the largest single difference you are likely to see between two Cypriot calendars.

A southerly island with a long day

At 35 degrees north Cyprus has the most even day length of any country on this list apart from Singapore and Malaysia. The difference between the longest and shortest day is about four and a half hours, compared with more than twelve in Scandinavia, and the fajr and isha angles are reached comfortably all year with no substitute rules needed. What does move the clock times is the time zone: Cyprus sits at about 33 degrees east and keeps UTC+2 in winter, so the timetable runs closer to the sun than in Western Europe and midday prayers fall near the middle of the day rather than well after it.

Choosing a settlement

The island is small enough that the astronomical difference between its eastern and western ends is only about eight minutes, so any listed settlement near you will be close. Dipkarpaz, at the tip of the Karpas peninsula, is the earliest for sunrise and maghrib; Baf in the west is the latest. If you are comparing the app against a board in a local mosque, expect the difference to come from the convention rather than from your position on the island.

Questions

Do the times match the timetable published in the north?
Not necessarily. The rows come from Diyanet’s Cyprus timetable and match it to the minute when they are taken from it, as each row’s label shows. The Presidency of Religious Affairs of the TRNC publishes a separate timetable that the app does not use, so no match with that table is claimed.
Why are southern towns like Limassol and Paphos on this page?
Because they appear in the published settlement listing the app uses, under their Turkish names. Muslim communities live across the island, and the list follows the source rather than a political boundary.
Is the whole island on the same clock?
Yes, today. The north kept permanent summer time for the winters of 2016 and 2017 while the south changed the clocks, and the two were an hour apart; that ended, and both now follow the European schedule.
