The Gambia prayer times

Daily and monthly prayer times for towns along the Gambia River. The times are calculated with the Muslim World League method, and every row is labelled as calculated with the method named.

Scope of this claim

No institutional timetable is served for the Gambia. The times are calculated from each town’s coordinates with the Muslim World League method and have not been compared cell by cell with a local mosque calendar, so this page makes no 0-minute claim.

Cities

Cities are listed by population. A city that is missing has no entry in the prayer-times database yet.

Calculation and source

Method
Muslim World League
Fajr 18°, isha 17°; a calculation, not a published timetable.
Asr
Asr begins when an object’s shadow equals its length, the Maliki practice followed by Gambian mosques. The Hanafi shadow-two Asr can be selected in the app; the other five times stay where they are.
Precaution minutes
None. The app adds no precaution minutes and personal minute adjustments start at zero.
Time zone
The Gambia does not observe daylight saving time, so the table never jumps by an hour. Because the country follows the river inland, the eastern towns see the sun set about ten minutes earlier by the clock than Banjul.
Hijri calendar and crescent
The start of Ramadan and both Eids is announced by the country’s Islamic bodies after the crescent is sought. The Hijri dates on these pages and in the app are calculated and can differ from the announcement by a day.

The Gambia prayer times

Which method the times use

For the Gambia the app does not read a timetable published by an institution; it calculates the times from each town’s coordinates. The method is that of the Muslim World League: fajr begins when the sun is 18 degrees below the horizon and isha when it is 17 degrees below, while sunrise, dhuhr, asr and maghrib follow from the sun’s position over the town on that day. The times have not been compared cell by cell with a Gambian mosque calendar, so this page does not say “0-minute difference”, and every row is labelled as calculated.

A country along a river

The Gambia follows its river for more than three hundred kilometres inland from the Atlantic, but it is narrow from north to south. That shape decides how the times differ: between Banjul on the coast and Basse Santa Su upriver there are more than two degrees of longitude, so sunrise and sunset come roughly ten minutes earlier in the east, while the length of the day barely differs from one town to the next. At this latitude the day changes by only about an hour between June and December, and twilight is short, so maghrib and isha stay close together all year.

The difference with the mosque calendar

Local calendars often add a few precaution minutes to some prayers and may use slightly different angles for fajr and isha. The app adds no margin of its own. If you see a steady difference of a few minutes against your mosque, the per-prayer minute adjustment in the app will close it without changing the method. Compare on the same day and for the same town.

Ramadan and reminders

Each town page shows today’s six times and a thirty-day table; during Ramadan the same data produces the Ramadan timetable, with fajr as suhoor and maghrib as iftar. In the app, every prayer can have an adhan sound or a silent alert and a reminder a few minutes early, and the widget keeps the next prayer on the home screen.

Questions

Which calculation method does the app use for the Gambia?
The Muslim World League method: fajr at 18 degrees, isha at 17 degrees and the shadow-one Asr. Every row is labelled as calculated.
Can I use Banjul’s times upriver?
Better not: sunset comes about ten minutes earlier in the east. Choose the nearest listed town, especially for iftar during Ramadan.
Does the Gambia observe summer time?
No. The country uses GMT all year; the times move with the sun but never jump because of a clock change.
