Maldives prayer times
Daily and monthly prayer times for islands across the Maldives. The times are calculated with the University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi method, and every row is labelled as calculated with the method named.
Scope of this claim
The Ministry of Islamic Affairs publishes the prayer times Maldivian mosques follow, but the app does not serve that table. The times here are calculated from each island’s coordinates with the Karachi method and have not been compared cell by cell with the ministry’s times, so this page makes no 0-minute claim.
Prayer times in major cities
Cities
Cities are listed by population. A city that is missing has no entry in the prayer-times database yet.
Calculation and source
- Institution
- Ministry of Islamic Affairs
- Method
- Karachi method
- Fajr 18°, Isha 18°; a calculation, not a published timetable.
- Asr
- Asr begins when an object’s shadow equals its length, following the Shafi‘i practice of the Maldives. The Hanafi shadow-two Asr can be selected in the app; only Asr moves.
- Precaution minutes
- None. The app adds no precaution minutes and personal minute adjustments start at zero.
- Time zone
- The Maldives does not observe daylight saving time, so the table never jumps by an hour. The atolls run north to south rather than east to west, so the difference between islands shows up more in the length of the day than in the clock time of noon.
- Hijri calendar and crescent
- The start of Ramadan and both Eids is announced by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs after the crescent is sought. The Hijri dates on these pages and in the app are calculated and can differ from the announcement by a day.
Publishes the prayer times followed by Maldivian mosques and announces the Hijri months. The app does not serve its table; the times on these pages are calculated.
Maldives prayer times
Which method the times use
The Ministry of Islamic Affairs publishes the prayer times that mosques across the Maldives call the adhan by. These pages do not read that table. They calculate the times from each island’s coordinates with the method of the University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi: fajr when the sun is 18 degrees below the horizon and isha at the same depth, with sunrise, dhuhr, asr and maghrib following from the sun’s position on that day. The result has not been compared cell by cell with the ministry’s times, so this page does not say “0-minute difference”, and every row is labelled as calculated.
A country that runs north to south
The atolls stretch from Haa Alif in the north, around seven degrees north of the equator, to Addu just south of it, while the whole chain spans barely more than one degree of longitude. So solar noon falls within a few minutes across the country, but the length of the day and the timing of fajr and isha differ between the northern and southern atolls, and the difference changes with the season. Near the equator twilight is short and the day length changes little through the year. Choose your own island, or the nearest listed island in the same atoll.
The difference with the mosque timetable
Published timetables often add a few precaution minutes to some prayers and can use slightly different angles for fajr and isha. The app adds no margin of its own. If you see a steady difference of a few minutes against your mosque, the per-prayer minute adjustment in the app will close it without changing the method. Compare on the same day and for the same island.
Ramadan and reminders
Each island page shows today’s six times and a thirty-day table; during Ramadan the same data produces the Ramadan timetable, with fajr as suhoor and maghrib as iftar. In the app, every prayer can have an adhan sound or a silent alert and a reminder a few minutes early, and the widget keeps the next prayer on the home screen.
